Hey guys!

Today I want to talk to you about why I started my zero-waste journey. First of all, I want to state that the phrase "Zero-Waste" is just a catchy social phrase. The truth is, it's almost impossible to be absolutely ZERO waste. If you didn't exist -that would be the only way to be truly zero-waste. I'm just saying...

I like to use the phrase "Low-Waste" because it is a much more achievable goal. We can all make little changes in our day-to-day lives that will make a BIG impact. That is why in this post I have included a downloadable Zero-Waste Transition Plan: The Basics to help you get started without causing you to feel all the pressure of being perfectly zero-waste. On this list I have included just the basics; i.e. paper towels, toilet paper, plastic bags and their reusable alternatives. Plus helpful links to the brands and products I trust. I do want to state that if you can, you should always look for a way to up-cycle what you already have or find used versions from a second-hand store before buying new.

So why is being low-waste important to me?

The first and most obviously reason is - to help our planet. We only have one planet and we should take care of it. Sure, scientists are researching Mars as our next home, but what are we gonna do once we get there? Destroy it. That's right, I said it. If we can't learn to take care of our current planet, what makes us think we'll take care of Mars? Or is it our plan to just hop over to another planet once we've used up Mars? Thus, destruction continues.

We need to take care of and nourish Earth. Not take advantage of it until there's nothing left. But it's so hard to not waste and not use things that have plastic...

No, it's not. It just takes a little effort and the willingness to change our habits. As a species, we have to step outside of our selfish comfort zone bubbles and contribute to something much bigger than ourselves. Up until a couple of years ago, I never thought of where my trash was going or the impact it had on the environment. Then, I stopped to examine what I was doing and the mess I was making. Everything that is not compostable and is made of plastic, goes NOWHERE. Years from now, is our planet just going to be heaps of trash? What are our future generations going to be faced with? This brings me to my next reason. My kids.

When they're all grown up, I want them to be able to flourish in a world with blue skies and green grass. Not fight for food or shelter or suffer from either extreme heat or cold. I know this might sound a little exaggerated but these are the harsh possibilities of our future if we do not make changes now. This reality is a big pill to swallow but you have to force it down and deal with it. For your future, for your kids' futures, for your grand kid's futures. You don't have kids? So what? Like I said, we have to step outside of our bubbles and do whats right for the planet as a whole.

Now I'll step off my soapbox and get to my third reason - money. You can save so much money by just reusing what you already have and fixing what's broken instead of buying new. Simple as that.

Thanks for reading and remember to download my Zero-Waste Transition Plan: The Basics.
